Bandcamp – Cheaper Than Free

March 15, 2012 by A.S. Van Dorston

Proof in the pudding that if you make music reasonably affordable and easily accessible in all formats, even those intending to pirate will pay. Every label should put their stuff on Bandcamp! But please, none of this $10+ for downloads crap. If you’re Adele or Madonna, I suppose you can get away with that. But why not treat your fans as people you actually like rather than suckers or thieves, and offer decent value. There is still a global recession.
Remember the practice of selling new release CDs for $10? Subtract the manufacturing, distribution, resale and some marketing overhead and $5-$6 for downloads seems reasonable, at least for pre-sales and special promotions. Remember those? Some fans crave lots of music. Why not bring back the bulk discounts like in record club models? Rather than focus on suing and arresting customers and shutting down pirate distribution tools, why not just offer people what they want? Letting iTunes monopolize distribution at a$$raping prices of $1/song is not the way. Buying six digital albums should not set anyone back more than $35, let alone $100.

The music industry needs to go back to business school and re-learn their jobs. FFS.
