This past month I’ve been addicted to Fellwoods. Formerly called The Moss, the Portland, OR band released their first full-length album, Wulfram in January 2011. A new EP, Gyromancer is also available for streaming, but no download available until they get a label to release it on record. Like a lot of bands I’m into lately, Fellwoods are influenced by a mix of psychedelic, prog, folk, blues and proto-metal/doom. While they refer back to a pretty specific era, mainly the early 70s in both recording style and vibe, they don’t sound like a copycat of anyone in particular. They manage to synthesize their diverse influences into a pretty accomplished signature sound, impressive for such a new band.
I often enjoy old, rediscovered proto-metal classics like Blackwater Park and November, but I found the only band that scratches the itch when I crave more Fellwoods is Ice Dragon, from Boston. There’s no shortage of Ice Dragon music — they’ve released three albums in just over a year, and are currently recording their sixth full length! Fellwoods and Ice Dragon had been paired up on my playlists for a couple weeks when I learned they were releasing a split 7″ single together. Perfect! They’ve kindly made them available for your listening pleasure on Bandcamp before the physical products are available.
Here’s the other recent offerings from both bands:
