Delays – Faded Seaside Glamour (Rough Trade, 2004)

March 22, 2004 by A.S. Van Dorston

Despite the numerous accolades as a major new British talent, Southhampton’s Delays have more work to do to measure up to the praise. Their initial singles “Nearer To Heaven,” “Long Time Coming” and “Hey Girl” all display the requisite catchy hooks and harmonies to help them challenge Coldplay for ubiquity on the airwaves. With tastefully jangly guitars, Delays absorb bits and pieces of psych pop, jangle pop and dream pop from the likes of The Church, The La’s, Stone Roses and Suede (with Greg Gilbert styling his vocals after Bret Anderson’s).

The results might have been professionally crafted by a Britpop focus group. Meaning, Faded Seaside Glamour feels calculated, and it’s intended sparkle threatens to fade to dreariness. The album’s funcrushing conservatism lightens up slightly on “Stay Where You Are,” with just enough electronic tweaking to suggest they are to Radiohead what INXS and The Fixx were to Orchestral Manoevres in the Dark. The rest of the songs have a pleasant enough sound, but are basically filler that would be hard pressed to qualify as Church B-sides. On the other hand, if you think the Thrills and Keane are a blast, then catch this before all the cutouts are sent to the landfill.
